January 11th, 2023 – The SPHM Unsung Heroes

Presented and recorded live January 11th, 2023 from 2 PM – 3 PM Eastern

Overview

Does your organization struggle with buy-in and support to utilize the lift equipment? Are your nursing injuries on the rise? Are you having any difficulty with sustaining your SPHM program due to high staff turnover?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may benefit from attending this webinar to learn how a comprehensive SPHM/lift team program can help move your SPHM program forward and help to overcome the day to day barriers.

This presentation will review how a level 1 trauma center obtained support 20 years ago to start a “lift team” program and how this program has evolved where this team are now the SPHM experts in the organization. They utilize lift equipment to mobilize the most complex/dependent patients including the ECMO population, severe burn patients, morbidly obese patients etc. They round in the ICUs at designated times to help with turning and repositioning of patients, they assist with post fall recovery utilizing the lift equipment, assist transport and therapy team etc.

Having such a team has helped with early mobility, fall prevention, pressure ulcer prevention as well as increase patient satisfaction.

They assist with the maintenance and inventory of the lift equipment to assure equipment readily available and in good working conditions. They educate the frontline staff, as well as identify barriers to help to move the SPHM program forward.

Since the inception of this team, there has been a 70% reduction of patient handling injuries, as well as a 90% reduction in workers’ compensation costs for these injuries.

Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the benefit of having an SPHM/lift team to maximize patient and staff safety.
  • Describe components necessary for a successful SPHM/lift team program.
  • Identify creative ways to mobilize some of the most complex patient utilizing the patient lift equipment.
