SPHM: A Professional Journey, Personal Experiences

Join us as Colin shares insights regarding the evolution of patient handling from 1983 to 2017 and provide a vision of future challenges and potential controls. In making his journey during this period there were success stories, lessons learned and personal experiences.

OBJECTIVE:

To provide lessons learned in trying improve the SPHM process for protection, help others to develop and share their personal experiences.
Virtually everyone in our world has the potential to be a care giver (in our employment, to family members and/or friends) and/or a patient/care recipient at some time during our life. How can we help the general population to recognize and respond to the potential harm to them and those around them from this exposure?

Colin Brigham started helping healthcare employers address the physical demands associated with patient handling in 1983 while employed as a health and safety professional for a workers’ compensation insurance carrier. He has continued to do so since then. He has served as President and is currently on the Board of Directors of the ASPHP, served in leadership positions with other professional organizations and was a contributor to The ANA publication Safe Patient Handling and Mobility: Inter professional National Standards. He will talk about changes in the field during his career, lessons learned, share personal experiences and a vision for the future.
