Overview
The Mobility is Medicine (MIM) program firmly establishes that a systematic and holistic programmatic approach is essential to combat the harms of patient immobility while promoting caregiver safety. Mobility is Medicine is an innovative approach that combines two established evidence-based programs: Activity and Mobility Promotion (AMP) developed by Johns Hopkins Hospital, and a Safe Patient Handling program. Focusing on mobility, interdisciplinary teams including nursing, therapists, and providers can improve patient outcomes, expedite recovery time, and shorten patients’ length of stay. Caregivers engaged with mobilizing patients can provide improved patient experiences and can bring the patient to their highest level of mobility. This presentation will encompass our hospital systems journey on the implementation of Mobility is Medicine and how our system has developed and improved our process of improvement to best serve our patients and caregivers.
Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand the importance of systemic and holistic approach to address patient immobility and enhance caregiver safety.
- Identify the core components and principles of Mobility is Medicine, which combines multiple evidence-based practice programs for mobility promotion and safe patient handling.
- Exploring the impact of interdisciplinary collaboration involving nursing, therapist, providers, and quality improvement data analysts in improving patient outcomes.
- Recognize the benefits of MIM in reducing patient and caregiver harms including inpatients falls and caregiver injuries.
Meet the Speaker(s)
Kelly Plunkett, MSN, RN, CCRN
Kelly Plunkett has over 18 years as a critical care nurse and nurse leader. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Western Governors University, she is committed to evidence-based nursing practice to engage the patient and caregiver experience. She is chair of the St. Charles Mobility and Fall Prevention Committee and it passionate to develop and implement strategies to prevent falls and minimize risks associated with mobility. Kelly has had opportunities to present on topics such a lean leader, mobility is medicine, and critical care medicine. She is proud member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Northwest Organization of Nursing Leaders.
Theresa Kramer, MS, PT
Theresa has over 33 years of healthcare experience in clinical Physical Therapy in a variety of settings, management and 22 years as the Injury Prevention Program Coordination for St. Charles Health System in Bend, OR. She completed her undergraduate studies at Oregon State University and received her Master’s in Science in Physical Therapy from Columbia University. As the Ergonomic Specialist for the healthcare system, she provides oversight for a variety of Musculoskeletal Injury (MSI) prevention strategies including office ergonomics, safe patient handling and industrial ergonomics. She enjoys problem solving with end users to create work environments that minimize the risk of MSI’s. Her experience as Safety committee chair and committee member as given her a broad range of expertise in many topics in Healthcare Safety. She has had the privilege of speaking at local and state safety conferences (COSHA, GOSH, HCEC) on a variety of topics and has been a member of the Oregon Coalition for Healthcare Ergonomics (OCHE) since 2007.Theresa was 2023 recipient of the COSHA Juniper award for advancing safety practices in the community.
Lisa Rodriguez, RN, COHN
Lisa is a certified Occupational Health Nurse with more than 30 years’ experience working in healthcare systems. Her roles have included Employee Health, Workers Compensation management, Environment of Care and Safety Program management. She is an experienced Occupational Health Nurse with a demonstrated history of program development, process improvement and leadership in the Health and Safety industry. Strong consulting professional skilled in various fields of healthcare, Health and Safety program development, Total Worker Health, Safe Patient Handling, Federal & State Regulatory Compliance, Emergency Management, Case Management, and Ergonomics. She is past president of the Oregon State Association of Occupational Health Nurses, and currently serves on the OSAOHN Board of Directors.
Brian Crockford, RN, BSN
Brian Crockford is a seasoned healthcare professional with a diverse background in both clinical and administrative roles. With extensive experience in managing and leading teams across multiple departments, Brian has demonstrated a commitment to improving healthcare quality, delivery and operational efficiency.
Brian is an RN Quality Improvement Analyst for St. Charles Health System in central Oregon. He is currently engaged in system wide improvement work via the Mobility is Medicine program at St. Charles, and supports leadership across the Inpatient Acute and Critical Care service line.
Prior to working in the Quality Improvement Office, Brian served as a key leader managing operations for 16 Operating Rooms, the GI Lab, Cath Lab Recovery, and Sleep Study/OR Neuro Monitoring . In these roles, Brian spearheaded the successful design, implementation, and training of the EPIC EHR system across five different departments, and enhanced the overall efficiency of healthcare operations. He was instrumental in deploying new procedures such as General Surgery robotics, Flap procedures, TAVR, Mako robotic total joint replacements, and Fecal Microbiota transplants. Brian practices LEAN/6s methodologies to drive rapid process improvements in quality and delivery. Inspired by Taichi Ono’s principles of respect for people, and Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge, Brian significantly improved the employee and patient experience.
Brian began his nursing career as an operating room RN at the University of Colorado health system in Colorado. Brian was recognized for their contribution to Six Sigma improvement processes and served on the Quality Assurance and Safety Committee, and was invited to present quality improvement work at AORN conference.
Before transitioning into healthcare, Brian held roles in the creative and technology sectors. As a Sr. Visual Brand Coordinator/Trade Show Manager at The North Face, he managed multimillion-dollar creative budgets and led creative projects in retail marketing. His earlier role as Vice President of Information Technology at Prospect Park Alliance involved designing and implementing a comprehensive technology strategy and managing IT infrastructure for a staff of 130 employees.
Brian combines a strong foundation in healthcare leadership with a unique blend of skills in technology and creative project management, demonstrating a versatile and impactful career trajectory.
