Overview
This webinar explores strategies to reduce caregiver injuries and improve patient/resident safety during transfers and mobility assistance. Attendees will learn practical equipment-based solutions and program elements to support a safer care environment across all levels of care. As the demand for care in home health, assisted living, and long-term care settings continues to rise, caregivers face increasing challenges in safely assisting patients and residents with mobility. Musculoskeletal injuries among healthcare workers, especially those related to lifting, repositioning, and transferring, remain one of the leading causes of lost work time and burnout in the post-acute care environment. This course addresses these challenges by presenting practical, evidence-based strategies to prevent caregiver injuries while enhancing patient and resident safety, dignity, and quality of life. Participants will explore the principles of Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPH&M) as they apply to diverse care environments where space, staffing, and resources may be limited. The webinar highlights how proper use of assistive technologies—such as mechanical lifts, transfer aids, and friction-reducing devices—can reduce injury risk, improve workflow efficiency, and foster a culture of safety. Real-world case examples illustrate how these tools, when paired with thoughtful policies and staff engagement, can transform daily care routines. In addition to equipment-based solutions, this webinar emphasizes programmatic and cultural elements essential to sustaining safe practices. Attendees will learn how leadership commitment, risk assessment, and ongoing competency training contribute to long-term success. Strategies for adapting SPH&M principles to the home environment, where caregivers may have limited access to standard facility resources, are also discussed.
Objectives:
- Describe the most common causes and mechanisms of caregiver injury during lifting, repositioning, and mobility tasks in post-acute and long-term care settings.
- Identify appropriate assistive devices and environmental adaptations that support safe, efficient, and dignified patient transfers across home, assisted living, and long-term care environments.
- Apply key elements of an effective Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPH&M) program, including staff training, leadership engagement, and policy integration.
- Evaluate risk factors within their own care setting and implement evidence-based strategies to reduce musculoskeletal injuries while enhancing patient safety and satisfaction.
