Overview
Patient mobility is essential to prevent hospital acquired disability and ensure positive patient outcomes. There are many organizational, unit, clinician and patient barriers that must be addressed to support patient mobility at a level that will prevent complications and unplanned transition to a skilled facility. These presenters will describe how to create a culture of mobility with interdisciplinary strategies, SPHM tools, and data collection methods to optimize patient care and ensure caregiver safety.
Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:
- Define hospital acquired disability and the associated negative effects for hospitalized patients
- Identify mobility barriers that must be overcome to achieve the desired outcomes for patients/staff
- Identify key strategies to create a culture of mobility and overcome barriers
- Describe how to use data and dashboards to achieve improvement
- Identify 1-2 implications for your own practice
Meet the Speaker(s)
Mary Hook PhD, RN is research scientist and nursing research manager employed in the Institute of Nursing Excellence for Advocate Health, the 3rd largest not-for-profit integrated health care system. She has extensive clinical, informatics, evidence-based practice, and research expertise with several studies focused on nurse-led mobility in acute care. She was a member of the interdisciplinary team that developed the Comprehensive Mobility Evaluation Tool (CMET) and served as Principal Investigator for the CMET Validation Study (2022).
Tricia Jaworski, OTR/L, CSPHP
An Occupational Therapist by background, Tricia has worked at Advocate Health for 25 years. Advocate Health is the 3rd largest not-for-profit integrated healthcare system in the United States. Tricia currently is the Midwest System Safe Patient Handling & Mobility (SPHM) Program Manager overseeing programs in IL and WI. She was a member of the interdisciplinary team that developed the Comprehensive Mobility Evaluation Tool (CMET). Tricia is certified as an Occupational Therapist through NBCOT and is a Certified Safe Patient Handling Professional (CSPHP) through CSPHP. Tricia serves on the Alumni Association Board for the School of Health Professions at Concordia University Wisconsin. Tricia is currently serving her second term on the ASPHP Board of Directors. As a member of ASPHP, Tricia is active on the education committee and co-chairs the marketing committee. Tricia is a co-chair of the WI & IL SPHM Network, offering SPHM educational opportunities, conferences, networking, and support for those involved in SPHM across the state of WI and IL.
