Video session to show therapists how they can utilize SPHM equipment and technology in their treatment sessions to maximize patient participation and functional movement for the patients while protecting both the patient and the caregiver form physical injury.
Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe three ways to utilize SPHM technology to improve patient’s function with bed mobility tasks.
2. Identify functional ways to utilize powered and non-powered stand lifts and powered stand lifts in treatments for standing and transfer tasks.
3. Identify ways to use different SPHM mobility slings with powered stand lifts, ceiling lifts, floor lifts to keep transfers and gait activities functional and therapeutic for the patient.
Meet the Speaker
Mark Van Leuven PT, CSPHC
Mark Van Leuven is a dedicated safe patient handling consultant with Craigmile Health Solutions, specializing in education, training, policy development, and facility risk assessments across New York State. A 1995 graduate of SUNY Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse, Mark has spent the majority of his career in acute care, with a strong focus on early mobility in the ICU and safe patient handling.
For over 15 years, he played a key role in advancing safe patient handling initiatives, co-chairing a program he helped develop at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY. Since 2018, he has been committed to supporting healthcare facilities in implementing effective safe patient handling programs. Mark is passionate about promoting safety, reducing injury risks, and improving patient outcomes—a mission driven by his early training in body mechanics and lifting techniques.
Mark has held his CSHPC certification since 2018 and continues to advocate for the transformative benefits of safe patient handling in healthcare settings.
