Examine how a new approach to educating can influence the day to day routine of caregivers and effectively change the culture of an institution. Look at the SmartMOVES program as an example of effective integration into the culture.

On completion of this training program, participants will be able to:

  • Show how structured education can affect outcomes
  • Use low-tech equipment to achieve goals
  • Understand the next steps for integration
  • Focus on sustainability/changing culture

Tongela Miller
Tongela graduated from Baltimore City Community College in 2003 and began her nursing career at Saint Agnes Hospital on a 20 bed Intermediate care unit.  Out of her 10 years spent on the IMCU she held the position of Clinical Unit Coordinator for 3 years. In the fall of 2011 she enrolled at Notre Dame of Maryland University and graduated in 2014 with her BSN.  In 2013 Tongela decided to venture out of her comfort zone and transitioned to a float staff nurse.  She is currently the Program Manager for  SmartMOVES at Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore Maryland.

Ashley Locklear
Ashley Locklear has been a registered nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL for 4 years. She graduated from Pensacola State College in 2012 and will finish her BSN from the University of West Florida in December. She began her career on a Neuro/Trauma unit. After taking interest in protecting caregivers from injuring themselves while mobilizing patients, she pursued her current position as a Program Manager of SmartMOVES, an Ascension Health safe patient mobilization initiative. Ashley has been a program manager since April 2015 and continues to work closely with the Ascension Health SmartMOVES team as they work diligently in creating a safe patient mobilization program that is sustainable.

Jordon Zirlott
Jordon has been a nurse at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Al since 2009. He graduated from the University of Mobile with his bachelor’s degree in Nursing and is currently working on his master’s degree in Business Administration.  Jordon started his nursing career in the Medical Intensive Care Unit where he worked until taking a leadership role as Nurse Manager of Telemetry at Providence. In December of 2015 Jordon joined the Ascension Health SmartMOVES team in an effort to combat the growing issue of caregiver injuries related.
