Overview
This presentation will dive into all the necessary components of providing simulation experiences that will connect to the heart of the participants. When designing scenarios that are meaningful and engaging it is imperative to be thoughtful of the foundation or “why” of the intended lesson, the focused simulated activities, and following up with a comprehensive debriefing. The goal is to bring sustainable positive change that will help drive best practice for fall prevention, safe patient handling and mobility to the frontline of caregivers cascading to the patient with zero harm for all.
Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify the necessary components when developing simulation exercises for all levels of staff.
- Explore creative and proactive scenarios that will help learners understand the importance of connecting to the heart of the simulation participants.
- Understand the importance of a comprehensive debriefing immediately following a simulated experience.
Meet the Speakers
Rhonda Turner, DNP, MSN, RN, CSPHA
Rhonda has been in healthcare for 38 years in various roles. She acquired her BSN in 2014 and her MSN-Leadership in 2018. She currently works as a Sr. RN Clinical Stroke Program Manager. In addition, she leads a large healthcare system for fall prevention, SPHM, and early mobility by identifying methods to increase awareness and how a focused program can positively impact patient outcomes while reducing injuries to the patients and frontline staff. Rhonda is a national and international speaker since 2015, a published author, has been a board member of ASPHP since 2019 and is now serving as the Executive Secretary Treasurer. She is also in progress of Graduated with her DNP in April of 2024. Her mantra is “Empowering others to lead the future”.
Jessica Bratcher, CSPHA, SPHM Coordinator
Jessica Bratcher is the regional Safe Patient Handling & Mobility coordinator for Mercy Health System. She provides oversight the SPHM Program, champions, and unit peer leaders in 17 healthcare facilities. She has worked in various areas of healthcare for around 15 years starting in long term care, then being with my current facility for almost
13 years. As being an injured healthcare worker, she is passionate in coaching my patients and coworkers on the importance of utilizing safe patient handling and mobility equipment in daily use. Her aspiration to continue her journey and advocate for injury prevention on a national level.
Liza Laurent, SPH Program Manger, CEAS I
Liza Laurent has over 24 years of healthcare experience working in inpatient, acute rehab, and 9 years in Safe Patient Handling for the UCLA Health System. She is a graduate of Mount St. Mary’s University in Physical Therapy and Gerontology. As SPH Program Manager, for the health system, she provides oversight of SPHM in a variety of patient care settings. She partners with Workers Compensation to review and help mitigate worker injuries sustained during patient mobility. She works closely w/Furniture Management and Logistics Teams to ensure SPH equipment interfaces with all patient care equipment for patient and staff safety. She serves on several committees including Products, Sustainability, Environment of Care and Falls and Mobility Prevention as subject matter expert. She enjoys problem solving, bringing real life experience to ongoing staff education and art of “bringing audits to life.” She has had the privilege of being a guest speaker at the UCLA School of Nursing on the topic of Safe Patient Handling since 2018.
