Overview

Skin and wound care, whether prevention or treatment, can pose a threat of worker injury – lifting, repositioning, transferring, mobilization and more pose these risks. A discussion of worker injury is included. SPHM as a solution to preventing worker injury during mobility, and SPHM as a safety strategy to incorporate in the treatment of skin injury is included.

Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:

1. Outline worker injury in the healthcare environment
2. Explain the reason for worker injury associated with wound prevention and treatment
3. Describe SPHM in wound prevention
4. Describe SPHM in wound treatment


Meet the Speaker(s)

Alleen Wilson, CAWC
Ms. Alleen Wilson is a risk control professional with over 25 years of experience, ten years working in the capacity of risk control for a variety of healthcare facilities including acute, long term care, SNF and assisted living. Her areas of responsibility include risk assessments, consultative services, and managing risk control services for a portfolio of accounts. She markets risk control services, provides technical advice and account information to underwriting and business development for risk assessment and analysis, and coordinates the provision of risk control services on assigned accounts.

Alleen earned a Certified Authority on Workers’ Compensation (CAWC), is a registered Loss Control Consultant in the State of Texas and an approved Field Safety Representative in the State of Arkansas.

Susan Gallagher, PhD, MSN, MA, RN, CBN, HCRM, CSPHP
Susan Gallagher earned a Master’s in Nursing: Advanced Practice WOC Nursing from the University of Southern California in 1995. She also holds a Master’s in Religion and Social Ethics and a PhD in Policy Ethics from the University of Southern California. Dr. Gallagher is certified in Bariatric Nursing and is a Certified Safe Patient Handling Professional. She is formerly a Senior Risk Analyst for Stevens and Lee Lawyers and Consultant. She is immediate past president of Association for Safe Patient Handling and Professionals, Associate Editor for Workplace Health and Safety (AAOHN), has served on a number of international boards, and is a recognized consultant across the globe on skin and wound care, outcomes, bariatrics, ethics, risk, and loss control. She is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, books, and book chapters, including the ANA Implementation Guide to SPHM Standards, Bariatric SPHM, and more. She is currently executive program director for the Bariatric National Solutions Conference held every year in the fall.
