Overview

Safe Patient Handling & Mobility programs are implemented with growing vigor. However, getting them started and sticking poses great challenges from many. This session will discuss the Southern Illinois Health case review to explore the challenges, strategies and real-life applications that healthcare organizations have done that have resulted in significant reductions in worker compensation incidents as costs related to moving patients, as well as reducing patient falls, hospital acquired pressure injuries and other complications associated with immobility.

Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the challenges the Southern Illinois Healthcare was facing associated with patient handling.
  • Discuss the approach utilized to create sustainability in mobility programming
  • Describe the comprehensive approach utilized to create engagement, sustainability & continuous improvement
  • Identify the results attained & focus for the future

Meet the Speaker(s)

Tariq Alkhatim, MS

Andy Rich, MS, OTR/L, CSPHP
Andy Rich received his Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy at Rush University. Upon graduation in 1997, he worked in the more traditional roles as an occupational therapist. In 2004, he entered the world of safe patient handling.

He served as a member of on the board of directors for the Association of Safe Patient Handling Professionals. Andy uses his passion & creativity to design safe patient handling products & programs that help both patients & caregivers remain safe. Andy speaks at numerous regional & national conferences on topics ranging from making a business case for a safe patient handling programs to creating & sustaining success in safe patient handling. For 20 years, he has worked as a consultant, clinical manager & solution manager for Arjo’s MOVE Programs.

He leads teams using behavioral based safety, right-just culture, system theory, improvisational comedy & simple strategies to infuse fun & passion into change initiatives creating results both his mother & clients are uber-proud of.
