Patients and residents who have morbid obesity are at greater risk for developing COVID-19, they typically have a more complex course of treatment and recovery can be prolonged. The risk of patient and worker injury are profound not only because of the many challenges in positioning and mobilizing the patient, but also the cellular changes that accompany obesity that place the patient at greater risk for severe deconditioning and weakness. This course outlines the specific SPHM challenges associated with the individual who is obese, but also the general care issues associated with the person who has had a prolonged hospitalization. A case study is included.
Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the relationship between adiposity and COVID-19
- Identify severe deconditioning associated with the person who is obese and has COVID-19 infection
- List the steps in early, early mobility

Susan Gallagher PhD CBN CSPHP
Susan Gallagher, is a trained wound ostomy continence nurse, certified bariatric nurse, health care risk manager and certified safe patient handling professional. She has certificates in Six Sigma-Health Care and Six Sigma LEAN. Susan holds a masters degree in nursing, a masters degree in religion and social ethics, and a PhD in policy ethics. She is a recognized expert in safety and outcomes with emphasis on bariatrics, skin/wound care, safe patient handling and mobility, and loss control. She lectures internationally and has authored over 200 articles, books or book chapters. Her professional objective is to assist organizations capture quality and sustainability through customer sensitive initiatives, supported by quantitative performance improvement outcomes.
