Live Webinar: Safe Patient Handling for Gait Training and Transfers: A Case Study Presentation for Rehabilitation Team
Presented live January 13th, 2021 2 pm – 3 pm Eastern
Deformities, weakness and impairment cause difficult transfers and an altered gait cycle. Safe patient handling devices enable the therapist to efficiently focus in educating the patient during transfers and gait training. Positive feedback from both patients and therapists is identified as a significant factor in the utilization of safe patient handling devices. Decreasing the fear of falling from a patient’s perspective translate to improved confidence in treatment by the therapist as well as increased patient participation. The use of the Rifton E-Pacer aims to provide a feeling of confidence to both patient and therapist during the transfers and ambulation.
Different devices were trialed by the therapists to compare ease of use and feedback of proper support without pain during transfers and ambulation. Most amubulation support devices have a body support system that sustains the complete body mass. During the lifting process, thigh straps and pelvic positioner predispose the hip joints towards extension. Partial weight bearing during ambulation training can also be achieved.
Competency training for the ambulation device (E-Pacer) reflected increased engagement among clinicians. An E-Pacer specific evaluation/criteria were formulated in order to facilitate ease of use. The E-pacer is limited to a capacity of 350 lbs, height of 6’4” and girth dimensions of 22”- 60”.
Objectives – After this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify how to develop a structured process for rehabilitation related equipment procurement.
- Possess knowledge on how to utilize a SPH equipment specific to be used by therapists during treatment
- Learn strategies on how to develop customized education and training sessions based on different rehabilitation needs.
