OR Injuries: Avoiding the Physical and Financial Pain

This one-hour lecture will discuss sources of patient and staff injuries in the perioperative area. Supporting legislation and cultural differences and direct and indirect costs will be discussed. Finally, mechanisms to avoid injury will be highlighted.

Dr. Patterson has led multidisciplinary teams in over 35 hospitals focused on improving orthopedic and surgical care through national benchmarking, evidenced based practices, and workflow re-design to measurably improve healthcare outcomes for a wide profile of client hospitals, operating rooms, and orthopedic service lines.

Dr. Patterson is a certified orthopedic nurse practitioner and brings over 25 years of clinical experience in healthcare consulting, direct advanced orthopedic patient care, university-level teaching, quantitative and qualitative NIH research.  She has over 30 peer reviewed publications including, three chapters in nursing texts, six research articles. She is a past president of the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON) and was recently awarded The Outstanding Contribution to Orthopedic Nursing. Dr. Patterson  has delivered hundreds of presentations  and review courses and continues to be speak nationally and internationally .

Dr Patterson was part of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurse’s Research Task Force on Safe Patient Handling and Movement (SPHM), working with The Veteran’s Administration, Tampa, NIOSH, ANA and ergonomic specialist to delineate high-risk for injury tasks and develop algorithms for staff and patient safety.

Dr. Patterson received her B. S. in Nursing at Fitchburg State University, a Master’s Degree from Boston College, and her PhD in Nursing Research from University of Massachusetts Medical School.
